I think the wood is called Wenge. I have a brush with a handle made from the same wood and have seen it used in guitars too. You can't see the grain that well in my pic unfortunately.

After a quick google, its an African hardwood. I'm not sure if availability is limited or not..

JES IT'S AFRICAN WENGE WOOD(Millettia laurentii) a tropical timber, very dark in color with a distinctive figure and a strong partridge wood pattern. The wood is heavy and hard, suitable for flooring and staircases.
