Anyone else miss this new Wilkinson Sword Retro Classic?

I was surprised to find them in my local Waitrose last weekend - they never bothered stocking the plastic Classic.

£12, and no indication that it was a 'special' price.

Seen one of these in my local Tesco earlier and picked one up to try today.

I was on 7 days beard growth which my usual razor, an Ikon Tech, breezes through with my favourite Perma Sharp blade.

Loaded the Perma Sharp into the Wilk Razor and as anticipated, it did struggle to get through the beard but did manage to do it.

Was a very mild and smooth shave though. I imagine it would be quite a nice shave on 1 or 2 day growth.

Won't replace my Ikon Tech, but will see some action on those days where I am in a rush/too tired to take the extra care required for the Ikon Tech, which if not careful, can bite quite easily.

The two main criticisms of the Wilk Razor for me are:

  • the head is a bit too big for me to get to the tricky areas around my nostrils.
  • the angle for the shave is quite narrow and the head is very slippery. Found on a couple of occasions that I was just sliding the head across the skin without actually cutting anything.

Other than the above, it seems good value and will see some action.

Good that you have this again in supermarkets. Bought mine last week in France, but I am underwhelmed. Not sure that this will be a good entry point for new wet shavers.

I bought mine from the local Tescos (after being fooled by a fake on eBay). So far, its a bit meh! Can't find a blade that suits it and all shaves have been disappointing. Tried Derby Extra (not very close shave and caused irritation), Personna Red (smoother and milder than the Derby but not really a close shave either but no irritation) and a Gillette Green (closer shave but major irritation). It might end up being gifted to the other half with personnas. Gone back to the EJ89, which shaves far better with the same blades.

It's a Chinese Weishi razor with the Wilkinson logo etched on the barn doors. Order enough of them and the manufacturer will etch whatever you want on the razor for free.

But it's good that Wilkinson is noticing the DE razor market resurgence. It's a bit like vinyl comeback where this would be a Sony $50 re-branded Chinese USB turntable.
I understand that this Wilko premium is made in China, if so would that be a problem?

No problem you can find lots of Chinese razors appearing as Established Brand names. RazoRock comes to mind. Chinese Razors are made to a much higher standard now a days.. Some people complain about zamak....but Merkur, MÜHLE and other manufacturers all use zamack and there are no issues. At my age they will last a lifetime!
