Aeropress

I use a metal filter in mine. It has a lot going for it,

That was the only thing that I thought might help the Aeropress. Having larger holes would seem to bring out more flavor than paper, Sorta like a French Press with tiny holes.....heh.

Those metal filters are expensive if I remember right.

They're not cheap. I have the orginal Abel Standard filter. I think most people now use the Abel Fine filter. The newer mesh style filters from Kaffeologie and Kohi look interesting and seem to be very popular.

You really need a burr grinder for grinding coffee beans. Unless your objective is grinding for Turkish! Blade grinders will give you a very uneven and non uniform grind. You can get a Hario Slim Mill for a bargain £15 on Amazon. It's not in the same league as more expensive hand grinders like a Lido 2 and Hausgrind but it's far better than a blade grinder. It's small, portable and pretty good. Other affordable alternatives are the Rhino and Porlex.

In terms of grind for the Aeropress, it depends on how you're brewing. The Aeropress is so versatile that you can brew coarse or finer and alter your steep time as needed. Most opt to grind fairly fine, drip range, and shorten the brew time.

This may be something I would be interested in buying. I have a small blade grinder and some JBM beans. Is it any special grind quality for the Aeropress?

My Aeropress arrived today with some Rave coffee signature blend, what a difference from my old drip machine, I put in one and a half scoops of coffee using the inverted method, stirred then let it stand whilst I made my sandwich. Popped it onto my mug and slowly pressed the plunger home. Topped it up with water a wee bit milk and had a sip. How can something taste so good come from such a simple device. Cleanup was a breeze compared to my old filter machine.

I can see this is going to get a lot of use. Thanks Chris for your post, I am embracing the coffee rad now :p

I went a bit OTT with the coffee dose yesterday and spent most of the day in a bright daze ending in caffeine withdrawal later :p I tried 17g dose this morning instead of 26... much better. I am loving this, so simple to use and even easier to clean.. win win.

I've not been weighing mine, just using two level scoops per mug which seems to roughly equate to a double espresso. It is tempting to keep going back for another though! Next time I make a brew I'll weigh the coffee and see how much I'm using.

I did used to have an espresso machine, but to be honest it was such a faff to use and clean that I got fed up and went to a Tassimo. That's not had a lot of use since I got the Aeropress.

I have two 350g bags of Rave Signature incoming, yay!

I like the Rave signature, I am going for original coffee next rather then blends, there is a coffee called Old Brown Java that I want to try, but I am waiting for my grinder to arrive first.

I made that mistake this morning. Had a mug before picking up my daughter from nursery. The teacher must've thought I was on speed.

I got one a few weeks back along with a hand grinder. Still experimenting with the inverted method and the like. A few very strong ones but generally I use a scoop of beans and fill up to four. Brew for about 1min 30. Have to watch my temperature though I've scalded a few cups. My local coffee shop stocks Artisan Roast beans which is very handy.

Thread revival, but I ave just joined the Aero' club!
It cam with some ground coffee, but it is a fairly mild light coffee and quite coarsely ground. I thought it would be better a little more finely ground. I'll grind my own and see.
But so far (one cup!) I like it. It will never replace my espresso machine, well it will when camping, but I Can see it getting a lot of use!

Any tips?

Metal filter! The taste is incomparable to the paper filters it comes with.
