    Shavettes in to straights?

The Artist Club format gets pretty close. If you pick up a Kai Captain or a Feather DX you will get a fairly similar feel. The Feather SS and the wooden handled Kai both have a lip which makes the shaving experience more hybrid and less close to a traditional straight shave. The Kai Captain...

    Hair Trimmer Electric

I am really tempted by these. How do you adjust the cutting length though? Or are they just for close cuts?

    Hair clippers

SWMBO won't touch mine. About 20 years ago I convinced her to clipper my hair. Unfortunately we got confused and thought a number 8 was the 8mm comb. Needles to say I ended up with a severe buzz cut. She threw out the clippers when I wasn't looking and had refused to cut my hair ever since. This...

    Hair clippers

I went with Andis. Apparently Andis and Oster are the big rivals to Wahl. Watched about 20 fading videos. With the lever it wasn't too hard. Everyone is buying Wahl because of the brand recognition, they are either over priced or out of stock. According to Camel Camel Camel the Andis and Osters...

    Hair Trimmer Electric

I have just researched at length this and performed my own first self haircut. The first thing I found out is that there is a difference between a hair clipper, a hair trimmer and a general (beard) trimmer being sold for general hair cutting. A hair trimmer replaces a cut throat for...

    Make Shavettes great (again?)

That's what we need... Someone to make an inexpensive frame back with set of blades... and offer it with a good honing service. I am sure there is a factory in china that could churn out more reliable flat blades and make a frame back holder. That would surely be more consistent than trying to...

The folding Excelia was the best by far. How I miss that razor. I gave mine away.

    Make Shavettes great (again?)

The Kai Captain with an AC Pro blade or the DX with a proguard both give shaves that are pretty close in feel to a straight razor shave. The SS if used correctly behaves like a hybrid somewhere between a DE and a straight. The only real issue with these is the price but you can pick up cheap...

    Confused !

It depends on the quality of the boar brush. If the knot is shaped through tying it (i.e. The natural hair ends remain) then the hair tips will split like human hair making soft feathery texture. This also increases the surface area making the brush much much more efficient. Therefore a well...

    Help needed regarding honing

Move to CrOx is no problem. Be aware that CrOx can vary in micron size by supplier. It's best to check under a loupe to make sure it is improving on the finish.

That's a shame - do you know why he gave up on them? Glad to hear he's OK in these times.

    Thought this might interest some

You could still join until a couple of years ago and get advice from members in the clinic section, but they have even closed that now. Bart (the founder of the site) was very helpful. I saw him post on another forum I think but not recently. There was a member, Disburden, who is super...

    Help needed regarding honing

I only know these things because they aren't clear on the forums / youtube and I ended up learning the hard way by making every mistake under the sun. As @Bazz says above - there are lots of ways to skin this cat. Your mileage may vary.

    Help needed regarding honing

If it IS just surface level rust then you should be able to polish out on the 16k. If the metal is compromised then you will need to hone at a lower grit. The 8k might be enough to deal with that. If the edge is compromised, you might need a honer to reset the bevel. Is the discolouration just...

    Help needed regarding honing

I have only tried DMT and Atoma. The DMT plates are heavier and wore down quickly. Nice to use as hones though. The Atomas have been better for lapping. Atomas seem to be the ones most people use. I really can't comment on others. If you try a different brand will you let us know how it handles?

    Help needed regarding honing

I think you probably just need to follow up with paste. Remember, with any paste, less is more in terms of what you put on the strop. If you use balsa make sure you lap it really well before applying paste.
