Newbie Straight razor enablement advice required!

You’re right Wayne - I had a couple of pretty gruesome cuts early on that were due to overconfidence. The advice I was given (and used) was to gradually build up so that you get used to holding the razor and getting to know angles before you graduate to shaving in every direction. Most important...

Newbie Straight razor enablement advice required!

@wayne_m When I first started I had both types of strop and found it much easier to get a rhythm going on a hanging strop - the only reason I can put this down to is the fact that I felt comfortable having the strop at a slight angle - that is, the hook higher than the handle. There’s another...

Newbie Straight razor enablement advice required!

As regards strops, I don’t agree that paddle strops are easier to use than hanging. If you keep the spine and bevel in contact with the strop you are OK - it’s only when you lift the spine that you may get problems, and it’s just as easy to lift the spine regardless of the type of strop. I think...

Newbie Straight razor enablement advice required!

My advice would be to go down the used rather than new route and I‘ve also read that the EBay seller mentioned above is OK. Go for a shave ready blade 5/8” or 6/8” but don’t bother about the make or, too much, about condition. If you find that straights are for you in the long term you can then...

    Wax jacket curious

I think what’s paramount with any waterproof jacket is that it’s breathable - no point keeping the rain out if you still end up soaked Inside. I should add that I do tend to sweat profusely.

    Any Idea As To Age?

Dating blades is notoriously difficult. One thing that helps here is the fact that ‘England’ is stamped as part of the makers mark. The McKinley tariff act of 1890 required country of origin to be included - so we can surmise that the razor was made after that date. That’s about all I can offer...

    Dovo Straight Razor for sale

I have this Dovo razor for sale. It’s the Fritz Bracht model and relatively rare as far as I know in that I’ve never seen another one on the various shaving forums. Probably made in the early 1950s it has had very little use and shows absolutely no hone wear. It’s a 5/8” blade in decorated...

    Used Kamisori buying advice.

If you don’t mind me asking, where did you get this from? Did you use a rolling action when you honed it - or just straight up and down on the hone? from the last photo it looks as though the initial grind was poor - but the original photo doesn’t indicate that.

    Thayers at Boots!

I agree it’s more expensive than some - but, I use a bottle about every year so the price becomes irrelevant really. Having tried Boots own range (with Tea Tree from memory), I’d willingly pay a premium for Thayers.

    Thayers at Boots!

I see both toner and astringent - it’s the astringent I use (with added alcohol) so I don’t see what’s girlie about it.

But does that mean that you will not get Ray Ban lenses, just the standard tinted lens in your prescription?

Am I doing something wrong? Stubble sharpness ..

I’ve always thought that people who believe they have extreme stubble have, in fact, very gentle fingers.☺️

    Cosmetic Dentistry

I read an article recently that warned against some dodgy practices in Turkey - mainly to do with crowns being used instead of veneers - apparently grinding teeth down to accept a crown puts them at greater risk of future problems. I have both crowns and veneers but decided against an implant to...

    J.A.Henckels Straight I.D.

The positives - not a great deal of hone wear; rarer model than some others; edge looks to be I’d decent condition. The big downside is the rust which looks to go pretty deep and, I’m guessing, will not be removed easily unless you go for a re-grind. The scales appear to be common or garden and...

Just been given some straight razors... Need advice

I would contradict the last sentence here as it’s very rare that pitting goes deep enough to make a razor unusable. I’ve restored hundreds of razors and don’t recall any that were total write-offs because of pitting. There have been some where I’ve had to hone past some blow holes - but not...

A pare of pants or trousers!

The golden rule when undressing in front of someone for the first time is remove socks before removing trousers. I think it goes without saying that all other items should have already been discarded.

    Song with the best lyrics

Stay away from my window - leave at your own chosen speed. You’re not the one I want babe, you’re not the one I need. Another Bob Dylan song.
