Post Shave Minefield

I must admit that the whole post shave thing seems like a bit of a minefield. For years I used Nivea Sensitive ASB after my c*rt shaves, probably solely because it was easy to pick up in the supermarket & I couldn't be bothered trying other stuff out.

Now looking at all these threads & SOTD pics, it seems there is an absolute smorgasbord of post shave products out there. Alum, Witch Hazel, Balms, Lotions, Gels, Tonics, Moisturisers, Toners, Aloe Vera, Aftershaves, Splashes, etc.

I have convinced myself over the years that I need to use balms because I feel I have sensitive skin, but I'm interested in changing things up, possibly trying some witch hazel, different balms or something else entirely if it will help my skin.

So what is your post shave routine and do you have any recommendations for witch hazel, balm etc. I have 2 balms on the go (Nivea Sensitive & Real Shaving Co Step 3 Soothing balm) & a Fusion one that must have come in a gift pack which is unopened. So I probably don't NEED to buy any balm for a while (since when has this stopped us buying more products?!) but curious as to what good stuff is out there for the skin of DE users.

My routine is pretty much cold water splash then ASB. Then generally Aloe Vera gel or moisturiser before bed & possibly some more of either one sometime in the morning.

Your search ends here mate,...look up BBA Post Shave Balm,....then pass your current stuff on to anyone who needs it.
Check out BBA's Vendor Offer for Members of TSR on Black Friday, unbelievable offers on probably the best stuff out there.

You won't regret it, I'll never use anything else,IMO the best out there.
50% off and 40% off everything else!!!..... and a free repeat order up to £50, just for leaving a review and being a Member of this site,...they're virtually giving the stuff away!!
Get You Some Of That!!!

The BBA PSB absorbs after 5 mins or so and IMO is the best post shave product on the market.

Apply liberally but beware not to do so with a white shirt on for example because it will be covered in Dragons Blood and is very difficult to remove. :)

Yes, you do look like David Dickinson initially, so apply it post shave, but before getting dressed and allow it to fully absorb

There are many variations on this theme. The only one which is right, is what works for you, so feel free to tinker

By means of example, I use the following and I have combination skin:

Balm (most frequent)
After shave lotion followed by moisturiser (usually winter)
Witch hazel followed by moisturiser
After shave lotion (usually summer)
Moisturiser (evenings if skin needs)

If it doesn't have alcohol in it, it isn't for me; it's particularly good with a touch of menthol. I've tried witch hazel, balms, aloe vera, moisturisers, yad, yad and they just don't do it for me. They usually leave my face feeling itchy and quite often greasy. I find an alcohol-based aftershave leaves my face feeling soothed and invigorated. TOBS, Trumper and Harris are my first choices, but I also like the Aqua Velva line, Gillette Cool Wave and several other budget aftershaves.

I myself have made a similar journey as well and have also found alcohol based post shave options to suit my skin the most.

Thanks all. Sorry for the total noob question, but with astringents like alum & styptic pencils, do you leave them on are you supposed to rinse them off? I suspect it is the latter, but just want to be sure. I used a styptic match yesterday over two nicks and my face stung for what felt like an hour or more.

Also is Witch Hazel meant to be left on or rinsed off, and I guess you do the same whether its the astringent or toner variety?
