Yaaaaay - another shave and another DISASTER! - *Updates*

Stick to Nivea Sensitive gel until you learn how to lather your cream and manage your razor. It is definitely no fault of Astras either, they are stellar blades. Just poor lather and poor technique, that's all. And of course no ATG for the first few months.
P.S. I would also suggest skipping all the prep bullshit, and making sure you're not using hot water. Doubt you will jump straight into the holy grail of cold water shaving, but at least use lukewarm, not boiling.

Hi,

Just thought it would update today with todays shave..

After a few mention it could be technique and the angle, I bought a Mach 3 to eliminate that. I spent a while lathering up to make sure it was really cushioning and used the following..

Mach 3 razor with brand new blade
Caties Bubbles Spanish Holiday Soap
Plisson Brush

First pass - WTG Perfect , no tugging, no irritation
Second Pass - XTG - perfect no tugging, no irritation
Third Pass - ATG. I decided to do this to get a true result of "if this wrecks my skin , then I'm just not destined to do a third pass). Well... it went near perfect. No tugging, no irritation, only skin issues were left from previous shaves. I made a concise effort of no pressure , in fact the razor fell from my hand twice as to how little pressure I was putting on holding it and shaving with it.

Conclusion... I suck at shaving with a DE razor lol. I must find it hard to get the angles right then as this shave has left me feeling like I haven't even shaved. Normally I feel it for a good few hours after at least.

Going to leave it a few days and shave again with the Mach 3 and see if history repeats itself. If so then will wait a few days and try again with the Gillette Tech

Congrats Matt, now you know you're not allergic to shaving, a perfect DE shave is just around the corner.
I personally never shave atg, a dfs is all I need, as I usually shave daily.
Good luck, though I'm sure you don't need it.

Hi,

I have tried not shaving ATG and it almost seems the hair on my lower neck doesn't start to come off until that pass.WTG doesn't seem to touch it or XTG. Its just really tough coarse stubborn stubble :(

Honesty is the best policy sometimes..When i ventured into the world of DE shaving another two friends started at the same time, one of them decided it wasn't for him, he just couldn't get his technique, and he said it was taking him too long to shave..and he was getting nicks& cuts all the time so he also bought a Mach 3 and is quite happy with it..it's not a mortal sin to use Disposible/Cartridge razors...He past on most his shaving kit, but kept some, my other friend uses both Disposible/Cartridge method & traditional wet shaving..In the last few months he bought a Futur Clone from Aliexpress, which he is going to pass on to me, because it's not for him & he's quite happy with his other razors ..Impulsive buying bouts get use all sometimes..Whatever you decide Matt, don't feel downhearted if DE shaving isn't for you..shaving should be a pleasurable experience not a painful one.Take it easy..and give that Gillette tech another try when your ready to do so...learn your technique, good preparation and shave WTG only, that's all you need..Regards.:)

PS: something of interest.
This pushed me in the right direction figuring out face mapping.

Well,

Big thanks to 49er for the Gillette Tech he sent me. Ive shaved a few times with this and a voskhod blade and it's definitely more suited to me. Lovely razor and combined with that blade seems to have helped a lot.

Really pleased Matt that it sounds like you may have found your "holy grail" with regards to the razor.
You will get there in the end my friend. :)

Great news Matt..
The Voskhod Teflon Coated ,are a excellent non-aggressive forgiving smooth blades, which will be well suited to your skin type, you'll also find the Personna Lab Blues the same. The Gillette Tech is a superb little razor..and for the time being, that's all need until you, yourself decides to use a more aggressive razor..Enjoy your shaves mate.;)

Exactly the blades I use when I find the razor a bit too agressive. Or until I gain the confidence enough with a certain razor.

Greeat minds..I quote you "Or until I gain the confidence enough with a certain razor.".well said!;)..For myself it was quite a daunting learning experience finding out which blade goes with what razor for your skin type, i find the Voskhod a excellent one, especially with my Merkur Slants..Non-Aggressive blades go well with Aggressive razors & vice versa, however sometimes this isn't always the case... Facemapping Confidence, good preparation & practicing your technique are what makes the shave so much better.
