Burma Shave Boar - Burma Shave Soap - GEM Junior 1907 - GEM SSC #1 - Alum - Boots Freshwood A/S - Dove Nourishing Cream
PiR0O1Y.jpg

The above set up is down to the TOST Christmas PIF.
After opening the Burma Shave set, I cold soaked and lathered the brush a few times. This has broken it in slightly as it has bloomed a bit and the tips have started to split and soften. The soap, now stuck firmly in the mug lathered up really easily. If there was a scent, I couldn't detect it.
The Junior with a new GEM blade was ultra efficient. I could tell after the first pass how close it was going to be.
Greatly pleased!!!

Prep: Valobra Glycerlanolina soap, Myrsol Emulsion
Brush: Rudy Vey Shavemac Silvertip Badger
Soap: Dove Beauty Cream Bar
Razor: ATT SE1 / UFO Tornado
Blade: Schick Proline P-30 (1)
Post: Thursday Plantation Tea Tree & Witch Hazel, CRSW Alcohol-Free American Barbershop Moisturising Aftershave
Scent: Terre D'Hermes

I always try to keep an open mind, so when this facial soap was recommended to me by a friend at a recent wet-shaving meet-up, I decided to give it a go. I used my normal prep and loaded a fresh blade to the razor I had been using for the last fortnight, to allow for better comparison. I loaded the soap directly to my wet face as I would with a shave stick, which for me is about a 30 second load. I then hydrated the lather using a reasonably moist brush, adding water as required as I lathered. The lather took longer than a typical shaving soap to form, and I would describe it as thin but very dense. I took my time to ensure that the soap was properly hydrated. The lather felt slick on my face and whilst thin, had a nice sheen. The soap has quite a strong clean "soapy" scent, but pleasant enough.

On the first pass (with the grain), I immediately noticed reduced lubrication or razor glide when compared to most shaving soaps that I use. Not a red flag, but quite apparent. This was accentuated in the across the grain and against the grain passes; not bloodletting, and I could feel the blade cutting nicely, but not comfortable, with some minor irritation after the final pass which was rapidly soothed by a cold water rinse and my normal witch hazel and CRSW aftershave combination.

Having said that, I achieved a BBS result, and as my friend had mentioned from his experience, the post shave is really good and from my perspective, slightly different to my normal shaving soap post shave feeling. I guess I would describe it as an "early onset" pleasant post shave. My face is normally refreshed after application of my post-shave products, then as time passes, my face feels progressively moisturised with a corresponding pleasant skin sensation. Hard to put into words. Anyway, what I noticed with the Dove soap was the onset of this sensation was faster and at least as sustained as my better soaps. I guess this makes sense, given the manufacturer's claim that 1/4 of the soap bar is composed of facial moisturiser. I note that Lactic Acid is quite high up on the ingredients list, and this may be a factor, as my face responds well to products containing Lactic acid (e.g. Myrsol Plastic Shave aftershave splash).

The soap felt good on my face throughout the shave, but the lack of lubrication for me was telling. It reminded me a lot of the French Osma soap; lather not that flash, and shave not that comfortable, but a good end result.

I would summarise by saying that the lack of lubricity would preclude me from regularly using this soap for shaving, but I would have not hesitation using it as a standby option, for example if I was traveling and couldn't access shaving soap.
