First DE razor

First razor was an old tarnished 3 piece Gillette I inherited from my dad, together with a blade he was done with. Well, in 1960 shaving wasn't quite such an art as it has now become.

JohnnyO. :D

First time I ever tried DE shaving it was with a black plastic wilkinson classic..... I was very young at the time.

When I decided to seriously start DE shaving, last year, It was a 34C

Mine was a Merkur 42, then a Parker 90R, used Wilky Black Bowl Soap and Merkur Blades and not surprisingly i didn't like the razors or the shave or anything, but back then i didn't know about Shaving forums, how to build a good lather, or technique and also about the vast range of products and the differences between them all.

Now with what i have learnt from you guys and from my own experimentation and with a little bit of money spent (   ) i get the best shaves i have ever had.

Steve

First and (so far only DE) is the ultra cheap plastic Wilkinson Sword Classic, which works surprisingly well. I also have a 1912 Pat'd Ever Ready single blade. I have a feeling something all chrome and shiny will be arriving in my bathroom very soon!

Also a Merkur, but a 34C HD, I think I used it for a few weeks, haven't been back to it since.
(my dad has it on loan right now)

Merkur HD was my first razor. Swiftly followed by the Futur.

FB, give the HD another crack in a wee while. Recently I started using mine again after months of ignoring it. I was really surprised at how good it was, and how much I enjoyed using it. Something must have happened to my technique in the intervening period.

I'm not saying it's not good, it's actually a v. competent razor, but I get no particular enjoyment out of it, it's got no soul...

It's German.
I can't argue with that ;)

Oh well, i tried.

Muhle 98, first week Derby blades and endless nicks. Last three weeks Astra Platinum and Iridiums blades, nick free fast, baby smooth shaves.

I really like this razor it's very easy for a beginner to use, but it needs decent blades.

The same here. I started with the Wilkinson then moved to a 34G HD (same as the 34C except it's gold). Of course that led to a lot more razor purchases :shave . Most used? The Merkur Futur, but all my others get an occasional day out as well

Mine too was a Wilkinson Classic. Long before forums such as this, I used it ala Gillette Contour TV adverts - the PAIN, the BLOOD ! :x Needless to say I returned to the Philishave/beardiness for several years. My first 'proper' DE was a Merkur 38C.

Father-in-laws gillette slim adjustable with some random shite blade, was still 10 times better than gunk and cartridge.Good razor for a first/beginner in my opinion.

Having discovered this forum through of all places a watch forum, I immediately felt at home and having lurked for a while bought a Merkur 38C. For me a great start.
